NICK’S SEELEY

(Post-Classic Unlimited Championship Winner 2006)

Nick won the NSW Post-Classic Unlimited Championship this year on a Seeley Commando. He is also our newest member.

"I built the bike in 1990, raced it for 2 seasons, then packed up racing - only taking it out on odd occasions. At this time I had built a 750cc 180-degree short stroke engine out of the original 850. I worked for a company that overhauled light aircraft engines so I had access to good machining and welding facilities. I ran the bike a couple of times and it went very well.
Before we came to Australia I rebuilt the engine with new pistons, cams etc, and had the crank balanced for the new heavier pistons; the bike then stood in my workshop where it gathered dust.
We then moved to Oz in 2004 where it again stood gathering more dust and sawdust, as we were renovating the house we had just bought. I then decided to run the bike but it vibrated something rotten so I put it back to 828cc/360 degree. The bike runs standard pistons, PW3 camshaft and 41mm inlet valves, although I reckon it went just as well with standard valves."

"We took it to the PCRA meeting at Wakefield Park; the bike ran OK but we had one or two issues, i.e. too much oil pressure, and the motor lost power after a couple of races. I stripped the motor and found a problem with the alloy cylinders. That sorted we went to the next PCRA meeting at Oran Park - the bike went OK, rider not so!!
To sum up, the bike that won the NSW Post Classic Championship had 60/65 BHP at the rear wheel, a wide spread of power, and with a little help from the rain it had 2 outright wins, 1 class win (second overall), and the last race I just had to stay on and finished third overall. We had problems with a sticking throttle that made it difficult to get off the line cleanly and it wouldn't shut down when trying to change up, and changing down was a bit exciting! As to future race meetings, finances are a bit low but if I can get some work then maybe I can do the Australian Championship races." Nick Sears
